Donald Kartiganer holds the William Howry Chair in Faulkner Studies at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Kartiganer has two favorite Faulkner quotes. He says that “one is a comment he made to the press after giving a talk at the University of Virginia: ‘I’m free game. But flush me first; don’t shoot me sitting.’ And the other is: ‘Life is sort of leaning over a banister to see who’s knocking on the front door.’ ”
