James Robert Southard

James R. Southard’s collaborative, lens-based projects explore labor, history, regional concerns, and identity. He has worked in locations like South Korea, Cuba, Brazil, Wyoming, Maine, Vermont, and soon Mexico City. He is often inspired by artist residencies at Skowhegan, MacDowell, Yaddo, and more. His work has been featured around the US and in international exhibitions in Moscow and Stockholm, as well as in the Internet Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. Alongside his studio practice, James has been teaching at the University of Kentucky since 2014. He earned his BFA from the University of Louisville and his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University.
