John Morthland says living in Texas—and Austin in particular—is “great” because of the “culture, food, ethnicity, feeling of wide open spaces,” but fears that parts of it are “starting to bear a startling resemblance to white, upscale L.A.” He has been a freelance writer for the last thirty years, and is now a contributing editor at Texas Monthly.
