Pioneering, progressive soul funk innovator Joi Gilliam is a multidisciplinary artist from Nashville, Tennessee, but is professionally affiliated with Atlanta, Georgia, where she lived for twenty years becoming a bricklayer, connector, and creative leader of music, culture, and fashion. Debuting with the critically acclaimed, genre-defying album The Pendulum Vibe in 1994, Joi broke barriers and shifted mindsets that furthered the trajectory of freedom and nonconformity in Black music including unapologetic sexual positivity.
