Charles L. Hughes is a writer and teacher based in Memphis. He’s the author of Country Soul: Making Music and Making Race in the American South and Why Bushwick Bill Matters, as well as a wide variety of articles and essays. He’s the co-editor of the American Music Series at the University of Texas Press and the co-founder of the digital music newsletter No Fences Review. He is an associate professor of history and urban studies at Rhodes College.
