Mark Burford is R. P. Wollenberg Professor of Music at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. His scholarship, including an award-winning article on Sam Cooke, has appeared in numerous journals. He is the author of Mahalia Jackson and the Black Gospel Field, named the outstanding book in the field of musicology in 2020, and editor of The Mahalia Jackson Reader, an anthology of writing on Jackson.
