Project: Color Portraits

Description: Maude Schuyler Clay is known for her work depicting the Mississippi Delta, but she is also a talented portrait photographer. Inspired by Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, and Diane Arbus, Clay seeks to make photographs that emulate, in color, the craft and subtlety these artists cultivated in black and white.


Maude Schuyler Clay was born in Greenwood, Mississippi. After attending the University of Mississippi and the Memphis Academy of Arts, she assisted the photographer William Eggleston. She was the photography editor of the Oxford American  from 1998 to 2002. She continues to live in the Delta with her husband and three children. Her next book, Mississippi History, which includes an introduction by Richard Ford, will be published with Steidl in December 2015.





Maude Schuyler Clay

Maude Schuyler Clay’s photographs are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and The National Museum of Women in the Arts, among others. Her book Delta Dogs was published by the University Press of Mississippi in 2014. She lives in the Mississippi Delta.
