Autobiogeography

With her series Autobiogeography, Allison Barnes investigates the marks left by man and by nature over the course of our shared history. Barnes writes:
“An impression put in the ground by an individual is a small event within a landscape; yet, impression is the word we use to describe the effect a story has on us. Aboriginal Australians used toas, typically made of wood and gypsum, as sign posts to mark the direction of departure from a campsite so that others could follow….These impressions are sometimes literally embedded within the landscape, such as raccoon tracks in the earth and the evidence of human passage, or commemorate a natural event, including a boar’s passing and the death of an animal. To leave a trace and to find one is a special privilege, for one is either given a story or choosing to give his or her own away.”
