Soulaan Femme
By Kourtney Iman King
Artist: Kourtney Iman King
Project: “Soulaan Femme”
Description: “Soulaan Femme” examines the natural and performative expressions of Southern Black Femme identity through traditional portraiture. The project critically engages with historical and contemporary representations of Black female sexuality and body image, particularly in the Deep South. By reimagining Black Femme portraiture as a tool for reclamation, it challenges objectifying narratives and affirms the dignity, complexity, and autonomy of Southern Black Femme women.
The work blends portraiture, personal reflections, and critical analysis to explore the duality of self-expression and societal expectation. These portraits act as a metaphorical mirror, revealing both the intrinsic and performed aspects of identity. Through this exploration, “Soulaan Femme” raises essential questions about the role of visual representation in shaping identity and the influence of cultural and societal norms on self-perception. Ultimately, the project offers a nuanced and empowering portrayal of Southern Black Femme identity beyond imposed stereotypes.
