Burnaway and the Oxford American are thrilled to announce a year-long partnership. This collaboration seems fitting as the two publications share an investment in the American South. Burnaway is an online art magazine that celebrates art from the South and the Caribbean. The Oxford American is a nonprofit arts and media organization that exists to explore the complexity and vitality of the South through exceptional writing, music, and visual art. Beginning January 16th, Burnaway and the Oxford American will co-publish feature articles that address art, culture, and current events in the American South.
“It is exciting to partner with a respected media organization like the Oxford American that is also deeply invested in sharing unique stories about the American South,” said Burnaway Editor Courtney McClellan. “Art is never made in a vacuum. OA’s breadth of exploration that includes music, film, food, the environment, will expand Burnaway’s scope. Providing our audience with this coverage and further access to exceptional writing will undoubtedly alter and reframe our collective understanding of artistic production in the South.”
“The South has always had an outsize cultural impact—in music, literature, and visual art especially,” said Sara A. Lewis, the Oxford American’s Editor-in-Chief. “Like the OA, Burnaway champions the visual artists working in this part of the world. We're looking forward to sharing this collaboration with new and existing readers, who, like us, are interested in the urgent and extraordinary art emerging from the South.”
Initiating the collaboration, Burnaway will contribute a feature article about Haitian muralist and Miami resident Serge Toussaint written by Francess Dunbar and the Oxford American will share an irreverent essay by Elena Passarello about bootleg recordings of Elvis’s worst soundtrack songs.
